Ingredients:
For the Naan Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons yogurt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
For Cooking:
- 2-3 tablespoons melted butter or ghee (clarified butter)
- Optional: Garlic cloves, minced, and fresh cilantro leaves for flavor
Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Sprinkle the yeast over the warm water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active.
2. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and vegetable oil.
- Mix the ingredients until a dough forms.
3. Knead the Dough:
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
- Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can add a bit more flour if it’s too sticky.
4. Let the Dough Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap.
- Let it rest in a warm, draft-free place for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
5. Preheat the Oven:
- If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven and preheat to the highest temperature (usually around 475-500°F or 245-260°C). If you don’t have a pizza stone, a baking sheet will work.
6. Shape the Naan:
- Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out each ball into a teardrop or oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
7. Cook the Naan:
- Carefully transfer the rolled naan to the hot pizza stone or baking sheet.
- Bake for 2-4 minutes, or until the naan puffs up and the bottom is golden brown. You can also broil for a minute or two to get a slightly charred top.
8. Finish with Butter and Flavor:
- Remove the naan from the oven and brush the tops with melted butter or ghee.
- Optionally, sprinkle minced garlic and fresh cilantro leaves on top for added flavor.
9. Serve Warm:
- Serve the naan bread warm with your favorite curries, dips, or as a side to various dishes.
